On Wednesday, 15 March 2023, Ahmed El Assal will hold a presentation at the Institute for Social Development (ISD) of the University of the Western Cape (UWC). Ahmed holds his presentation in the context of his field secondment at the UWC which he has started last month. The title of his presentation is: "Accountability and Service Delivery Performance in Uganda: A Comparative Study of the Education and Social Protection Sectors."
With his presentation, Ahmed will introduce his research which investigates tensions in the relationship between accountability initiatives and service delivery performance in Uganda. Employing a combination of a macro-political economy analysis based on the political settlement approach and a sociological grounded theory analysis of citizen's perspectives, his research explores under which conditions accountability initiatives can improve service delivery in the Ugandan case. Thereby, attention is especially paid to the complexities of power relations and state-society relations in a political setting shaped by clientelist politics and neopatrimonial structures.
