ESR 3 Effectiveness of social protection in fighting poverty

Objectives:
The PhD project will examine the determinants of effectiveness of social protection programmes in fighting poverty based on an extended literature survey. Kenya and Ghana serve as empirical case studies. Among other aspects, the project will focus on gender and inter-generational inequalities and how they are affected through social protection schemes. The researcher will select cases of social protection programmes that were successful and compare them with unsuccessful ones in order to identify the factors that lead to success operationalized as effectiveness in reducing poverty levels and increasing the well-being levels of the targeted populations.

Secondments:
The project involves a strong collaboration between Boğaziçi University and the International Institute of Social Studies of EUR and therefore includes mandatory research stays of the ESR in The Hague for six months in total.
Further secondments are planned as field research periods in Africa (3 months each), supervised by Moi University (Kenya) and the University for Development Studies (Ghana).

Specific selection criteria for this ESR position:
The successful candidate has completed an internationally recognised Masters’ programme in social sciences with an above-average GPA. The candidate should have written a thesis during the MA program. Specialisation in social policies, poverty-eradication, income redistribution and gender would be an advantage.
