Beatrice Gibertini and other ADAPTED PhD Candidates presented at DSA 2024

Beatrice Gibertini and several other Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) of the ADAPTED consortium attended the 2024 Conference of the Development Studies Association (DSA) to present insights from their individual research projects. The DSA 2024 took place from 26 - 28 June, 2024, at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. This year's conference theme "Social Justice and Development in a Polarizing World" was thematically closely linked to the ADAPTED research agenda. The event consisted of a range of panel formats including roundtables and more experimental approaches.

An overarching question addressed by the individual presentations was how the adoption of a social justice approach may change thinking and practice regarding global development issues. In light of this question, Beatrice presented insights from her second thesis chapter titled "The hustling lifeways of Black women in mining-affected communities of South Africa." In her research, Beatrice takes up the question of social justice by focussing on the negative impacts of mining activities in South Africa related to the intersections of gender, race and social class. More precisely, the research explores Black women’s livelihood strategies in South African townships in the context of extractivism exacerbating the vulnerability of women living in already precarious living conditions.

Also the ESRs Ahmed El Assal, Guido Maschhaupt, Irene Among, Kate O'Donnell and Petronilla Wandeto presented insights from their research related to the ADAPTED project. The consortium was, furthermore, represented by Prof. Andrew Fischer.
