Beatrice Gibertini (ESR 2) presented a chapter authored together with Anja Benshaul-Tolonen and Maty Konte at the 2024 CSAE Conference at the University of Oxford, UK. The tile of the chapter is "African Mining Economies and the Gender Gap in Political Participation" and investigates whether industrial and artisanal mining activities influence the gender gap in local level political participation based on Afrobarometer data merged with precise geo-located information on mining sites. Women's political involvement is analysed in terms of voting, attendence of community meetings and participation in protests. The chapter reveals that that employment is one of the main channels explaining changes in women’s political involvement.
At CSAE Conference, Beatrice's presentation was part of a panel discussion on "Natural Resources and Environment." The conference's overall theme was "Economic Development in Africa" and brought together an international spectrum of development economists working on African contexts.
